Dealing with Stress

We are all aware that too much stress is a bad thing. But can we avoid it?

The simple answer is no. Stress is necessary and is the part of the human psyche that has lead to the survival and advancement of the human race. So why is it a bad thing?

Stress is an indicator that some action is required. However, every action has a consequence and/or comes with an obligation to do something. We often know we need to DO so something or make a decision, but the resulting change may be unpalatable or may require an enormous amount of effort. The tendency is to put it off to another day. Temporarily we may forget about it, but it has not gone away and becomes a Snooze item in our minds, much like an alarm clock giving us 5 or 10 minutes more sleep before going off again.

So stress in itself is just an indicator that tends to grow impatient over time. Once it has a hold on you it will add to its portfolio quickly to undermine you in other areas. More and more alarms going off with less and less snooze time in between!

Over-time the less and less snooze time we get begins to impact our day to day functions meaning we are doing more yet achieving less. This is also about the time when our body begins to suffer, accompanied by the outward symptoms, such as irritability, butterflies in the stomach, forgetfulness, palpitations or a racing heart amongst other things.

To measure your stress levels try the Stress Quiz the eureka NLP site.

Is there a cure? No stress is just an indicator. Although there are many drugs to mask its power but no, not a cure.

Rather than seeking a cure we should seek a strategy. The strategy begins with a change in the way we perceive stress. Stress is just an indicator for some form of required action. That being the case we need to start with ourselves to change our personal perception, beginning with the often-heard statement of fact I am stressed.

Just reading it can make that knot in the stomach flinch. So now try saying to your self I feel stressed different experience right? It is far more accurate statement as I am implies permanent state / part of our identity, where as I feel is a behaviour.

Keep stress where it belongs as a behavioural level indicator for action. This positively positions us to be objective about what it is trying to tell us and to create a strategy for dealing with it. eureka NLP works with clients to transform stress into Well formed outcomes.
